Jose Mercedes 1998 Pacific Baseball Card

Touch day for Jose Mercedes, who showed up late to the Brewers/Expos game because he got the game time wrong. He wa scheduled to start but was scratched.
He then replaced emergency starter Steve Woodward but forgot his batting helmet while he was on deck. After getting hit by a pitch, he forgot how many outs there were and ran into a double play on a fly ball to the outfield.
He probably should have stayed home.

Nolan Ryan gets the Opening Day start for the Rangers and becomes one of five players to play in the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.
The others are Carlton Fisk, Rick Dempsey, Jerry Reuss, and Bill Buckner.
Ryan held the Jays hitless through five innings, but came out of the game, much to the chagrin of the 40,000 fans in attendance.

Mark Wohlers 1999 Reds Baseball Card

The Braves DFA Mark Wohlers after he walks six and allows one hit and two runs in his first two appearances. He is traded to the Reds ten days later and spends the rest of the season in the minor leagues, including a stint with Single-A Rockford in the Midwest League. He returns to the bigs with the Reds in 2000 and pitches until 2002.

1990s Baseball Injuries

Vince Coleman injures his hamstring trying to beat out a bunt in the first inning. He misses the rest of April, returns for one game on May 1, then misses another four weeks.

Tim Raines 1993 Bowman Baseball Card

Tim Raines tears ligaments in his thumb sliding into second base in the Sox home opener.
The injury costs him six weeks and he returns to the lineup on May 22.
