Benito Santiago wins his arbitration case against the Padres and becomes the highest-paid catcher in baseball.
Santaigo’s new salary is $3.3 million, the second-highest amount ever awarded in arbitration.

Carlton Fisk re-signs with the White Sox.
Hitting .189 in June, Fisk is released by the team just one day after breaking Bob Boone’s record for most games playing catcher. When the White Sox make the playoffs, Fisk went to the clubhouse to congratulate his former teammates, only to be kicked out by White Sox management.

MLB announces they will honor each league’s best hitter with an award named after Hank Aaron. The award is announced on Aaron’s 65th birthday at an event which includes President Clinton and Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Reggie Jackson.

He serves as GM through the 1993 season.

The Giants release Darryl Strawberry after he is suspended by MLB for violating his aftercare program and the MLB drug policy.
He signs with the Yankees in May.
