The Yankees trade Darrin Chapin to the Phillies for a PTBNL. Philadelphia sends Charlie Hayes to New York in February to complete the deal. Hayes plays for another 10 years and wins a ring while Chapin appears in one game for the Phillies and his major league career is over.

The Cubs sign Jamie Moyer to a minor league deal. They release him in March and he hooks on with the Tigers and spends the entire year in Triple-A but returns to the bigs in 1993 and pitches until 2012.

Coming off a 46-save season, the Angels sign Bryan Harvey to a four-year deal worth $15.5 million, making him the highest-paid reliever in baseball.

He plays in 65 games for Houston before being traded to Texas in September.

He plays in 11 games at Triple-A Albuquerque before being released in May and signing with Cleveland.

The Giants sign Shawon Dunston to a one-year, $1.5 million free agent deal.
Dunston hits .300 in 82 games and returns to the Cubs in 1997.

The Dodgers sign Eric Karros to a four-year $20 million extension. Karros made $3.13 million in 1996 and would have been eligible for arbitration at the end of the season.

Rod Carew, Fergie Jenkins, and Gaylord Perry are elected to the Hall of Fame. It is the first time since 1984 that three players are elected at the same time.

For the first time since 1971, when a bunch of people thought Yogi Berra wasn’t worthy, the BBWAA fails to elect a single player for induction into the Hall of Fame. Phil Niekro and Don Sutton receive the highest number of votes and will win election to the Hall in 1997 and 1998, respectively.

Bo Schembechler is named president of the Detroit Tigers. It did not go well. Under his tenure, the team fired Ernie Harwell and had public run ins with female reporters.
He was fired in August of 1992, via fax.

Alfredo Griffin undergoes outpatient back surgery in Los Angeles.
He is ready for the beginning of the season and plays in 109 games, batting .243.
