David Dellucci goes 0-for-4 with a walk against the Yankees in his big-league debut for the Orioles.
He is selected by the Diamondbacks in the expansion draft and becomes a starter in 1998.

Orlando Hernandez goes seven and gets the win over the Rays in his big-league debut.
He goes 12-4 as a rookie and wins a ring.

News reports surface that Kirk Gibson is considering playing in the Arena Football League with the Detroit Rockers.
Gibby played football at Michigan State.
He was released by the Pirates in May, but returns to the Tigers for the 1993 season.

Tony LaRussa calls Ruben Sierra “the Village Idiot” after Sierra rips GM Sandy Alderson.
Alderson sent Sierra a congratulatory note and bottle of champagne after he drew a walk to start a rally, which set Sierra off.
He later claimed he was misquoted, but the reporter had the conversation on tape, so Sierra stopped talking to the media.
Sierra is traded to the Yankees in July for Danny Tartabull.

Pedro Martinez throws nine perfect innings against the Padres but gives up a leadoff double to Bip Roberts in the 10th inning of Montreal’s 1 – 0 win.
He becomes the second pitcher in history (Harvey Haddix) to have a perfect game broken up in extra innings.

Cal Ripken’s slam highlights a six-run 5th inning and the Orioles beat Oakland 9-4.
It is the 4th slam of Cal’s career.

Texas starter Aaron Sele gives up 10 runs (8 earned) on 12 hits in 4 innings of work and escapes with a no-decision.
Every Texas starter collects at least one hit and the Rangers win the game 16-10 despite a slam from Rickey.

The Yankees select Brien Taylor with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
Taylor seems to be on the path to the bigs when he is injured in a fight and never reaches The Show.

Gary Gaetti 1993 Pacific Baseball Card

The Angels release Gary Gaetti.
He signs with the Royals and plays in the bigs through the 2000 season.

The Mariners select Alex Rodriguez with the overall No. 1 pick in the 1993 amateur draft.

The Phillies select Scott Rolen in the 2nd round of the 1993 amateur draft.
He slips in part due to uncertainty about whether he would go to college and possibly play basketball.
He wins Rookie of the Year in 1997 and is elected to the Hall of Fame in 2023.

Carey Schueler

The White Sox select Carey Schueler, daughter of G.M. Ron Schueler in the 43rd round of the Draft.
Carey played baseball in high school but chooses to play hoops at DePaul, where she is among the career leaders in 3-point FG%

Marshall Faulk 1994 Classic Baseball Card

The Angels select Marshall Faulk in the 43rd round of the draft.
He does not sign.

Greg Swindell 1996 Fleer Baseball Card

The Astros release Greg Swindell.
He returns to Cleveland for the rest of 1996 and ends up pitching through the 2002 season for multiple teams.

Matt Anderson 1997 Arizona Fall League Baseball Card

The Tigers select Matt Anderson with the overall No. 1 pick in the 1997 amateur draft.
He makes his debut the following season and goes 5-1 out of the pen but he would win just 10 more games and battle injuries.

The Phillies select J.D. Drew with the overall No. 2 pick in the 1997 amateur draft.
He holds out for a year and re-enters the draft in 1998 where he is selected by the Cardinals.
This does not endear him to Phillies Phans.

Roger Clemens hits Stan Jefferson with a pitch in the first inning to touch off a benches-clearing brawl. He stays in the game, strikes out 11, and gets the win. Boston manager Joe Morgan tells reporters he signed off on the pitch as retaliation for the night before and earns a three-game suspension.

Curt Schilling comes up and in on Deion Sanders and Deion goes to the mound.
The benches empty but order is restored and the two engage in a war of words throught the press.
Schilling was upset that Sanders had stolen bases late in a game earlier in the season.

1990s Baseball Injuries

Matt Williams fouls a ball off his foot and breaks it. He undergoes surgery and misses six weeks.
Williams was leading the N.L. in batting average, homers, and RBI at the time of the injury.

Dean Palmer suffers a ruptured tendon in his left biceps and misses the nearly four months.
He returns for two games in September and his season is over.

The Padres place Wally Joyner on the DL with a fractured left thumb.

The Dodgers sign Tommy Lasorda to a two-year extension through 1992.
There was some buzz that he was headed to the Mets after Davey Johnson was fired, but Lasorda said he wanted to stay in L.A.

Buck Rodgers 1991 Topps Baseball Card

6/3/91
The Expos fire Buck Rodgers after a 20-29 start, including 10 losses in their last 11 games.
Tom Runnells takes over and pilots the team until May of 1992.

6/3/92
Angels manager Buck Rodgers is released from the hospital 10 days after undergoing surgery for injuries sustained in the team’s bus acciddent in May.
